GCSE Qualifications at Holme Grange
When selecting GCSE options, it is important to choose subjects that offer the greatest opportunity for success, reflecting individual strengths, interests and future career pathways. All courses require determination, dedication and enthusiasm.
At Holme Grange, we believe a GCSE curriculum should be broad and balanced to keep as many opportunities open as possible. Most pupils will take 9 GCSE subjects, though individual advice is provided to ensure each pupil’s curriculum aligns with their abilities and goals.
Core Subjects
All pupils will study the following core subjects:
- English Language
- English Literature
- Mathematics
- Sciences:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
(pupils may choose either Trilogy Science or separate sciences.)
Optional Subjects
Pupils will select two or three additional subjects from the options below.
Recommended Choices:
We strongly advise pupils to choose at least one Humanities subject*:
- History
- Geography
- Religious Studies
We also recommend selecting a Modern Foreign Language**:
- French
- Spanish
- German
*** BTEC Animal Care must have been started in Year 9 and can be discontinued at the end of Year 9 if the pupil wishes to choose an alternative option.

Flexibility in Subject Choices
- pupils may choose two or even three Humanities subjects by selecting the additional ones as a “further choice.”
- Similarly, pupils may study two Modern Foreign Languages by selecting one as a “further choice.”

After GCSE
At Eaton Grange, we help pupils to “know themselves” better, guiding them in making informed decisions about their next steps after GCSE. We work closely with parents to explore available options and provide personalised guidance to support each pupil’s ambitions and aspirations.

To help families navigate post-GCSE choices, whether A Levels, vocational pathways, or alternative routes, we organise an annual Sixth Form Fair, providing insights into the diverse opportunities available for further education and training.
