Inaugural Climate Conversations event inspires action, discussion and hope at Holme Grange School
More than just a film screening, the inaugural Climate Conversations at the Caudwell Theatre event at Holme Grange School brought together parents, staff and members of the wider community on Tuesday evening to engage with one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.
The event marked the launch of a new monthly lecture series designed to inform, inspire and empower people to take meaningful climate action. Guests gathered to watch The People’s Emergency Briefing before taking part in a question and answer session with climate scientist Professor Christopher Merchant.
The evening was a natural extension of Holme Grange School’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. Sustainability is woven throughout school life, from climate conversations embedded across the curriculum to the school’s annual Mock COP conferences and biannual SustainFest events. The school’s commitment was recognised nationally when it won the ISA Award for Excellence in Sustainability.
Throughout the evening, attendees reflected on evidence presented in the film and considered their own responses to the issues raised. Discussion covered climate science, food systems, biodiversity, renewable energy, national resilience and the economy.
Despite the seriousness of many of the issues discussed, the overall tone was one of cautious optimism.
“The film is alarming but not alarmist,” said Professor Chris Merchant.
Leanne Hughes, Head of Sustainability at Holme Grange School, added: “The beauty of this briefing is that it does give you hope and that it does give you a direction so you know where to go.”
The discussion concluded with three clear actions everyone can take:
- Raise your voice – speak out and lobby for change.
- Join others and act together through community action.
- Reduce your personal carbon footprint.
As attendees left the Caudwell Theatre, there was a shared sense that positive change begins with informed, collective action.
We look forward to the next Climate Conversations event at Holme Grange on Tuesday 13th October you can book your free place here.
