Pupils across Year 1 to Year 8 enjoyed a series of poetry events with visiting children’s poet James Carter.
During an assembly, James Carter brought poetry to life through readings, rhymes, songs and interactive activities. Pupils joined in with actions, instruments and dance, experiencing first-hand the energy and creativity of performance poetry.
Year 3, Year 4 and Year 8 took part in writing workshops. Year 3 focused on descriptive language through an animal-guessing game, Year 4 explored syllables, rhythm and vivid adjectives to create poems and Year 8 worked on imagery and bold vocabulary to craft shared pieces. These sessions encouraged observation, expressive language and creative thinking.
The school also hosted the Inter-School Prep Schools Performance Poetry Competition, welcoming pupils from Churcher’s College, Lambrook School and Reddam House. James Carter acted as guest judge, with all solo and group performances showing confidence, clear delivery and thoughtful interpretation. Lambrook School won first place for their group performance.
These events highlighted the value of poetry in developing creativity, communication skills and confidence in performance.
