From broomsticks created from palm trees, carrots and bananas to powerful reflections on identity, resilience and imagination, the Holme Grange Literary Festival was a celebration of stories in all their forms.
From Nursery to Year 11, every pupil took part in this whole-school celebration of books and storytelling, with sessions designed to inspire, challenge and delight across all ages.
Over two jam-packed days, the school became a hive of creativity, with each session transforming into a portal for the curious. From the wild wonder of Korky Paul’s illustrations to the witty wisdom of Martin Brown, pupils discovered that storytelling isn’t just something you read, it’s something you live, draw, laugh at and share.
Maz Evans had spells flying and history reimagined with her signature humour. Pupils in Years 3 to 6, along with visitors from St Sebastian’s School, were swept up in the energy of her sessions, joining in with magical incantations and learning how ancient civilisations can be brought to life through comedy and creativity. Ali Sparkes lit a spark in Eaton Grange, where words tumbled into action-packed ideas and students were reminded that persistence is every writer’s quiet superpower. Holly Bourne tackled big questions about mental health, identity and growing up, encouraging students to reflect, speak openly and connect through the power of honest storytelling. Patrice Lawrence explored belonging and representation, encouraging pupils to recognise their own stories and voices in the world around them. Sufiya Ahmed blended culture, history and celebration in stories that opened hearts and minds, from designing henna patterns to exploring the joy of Eid. Seth Burkett reminded us that stories are everywhere, even on the football pitch, showing how ambition, connection and growth often begin with a single idea bravely shared.
Across every corner of the school, the message was clear: stories shape who we are and every voice deserves to be heard.
