Moving On

Holme Grange has a strong commitment to Years 7 and 8, underpinned by the belief that during these two years pupils develop into adolescence in a familiar and nurturing environment. This results in confident individuals who are ready to take on life's challenges.

At this stage in the pupils education the work ethic is truly developed as they move towards the Common Entrance exams at 13. An ability to work independently and master study skills ensures that pupils are well prepared for the opportunities that senior school brings. Many are pleased to find they are academically ahead of peers at their next school.

Year 7 and 8 pupils embrace the responsibilities and leadership skills that come with being at the top of the school, and can earn positions such as Head Boy or Girl, Head Boy or Girl of Sport and Prefects, among others. Privileges, such as a common room, further develop a sense of self worth and moral responsibility.

We would like to provide you with information about the next stage of your child’s education. At Preparatory School level, our aim is to prepare children for entry into their chosen senior school at the age 13+. Nearly all Public Schools accept children at 13, usually through the process known as Common Entrance (C.E.)

In the following pages we aim to highlight those areas you need to consider in your decision-making process, as well as explaining the different entrance procedures of our local independent schools. Most of the procedures are the same although there are some variations. The procedures are also likely to change as the financial and academic climate changes.

It is important to emphasise that the school will advise you which schools are likely to be suitable for your child. We hope that our advice and the feelings you get about a school and its Head on your visits will guarantee that your child finishes in the school best suited to his or her individual needs.
