ICT

Children grow up in a rapidly developing world where technology is ever more significant in their lives.  Information and Communication Technology (ICT) provision at Holme Grange seeks to address this important part of the lives of pupils, through practical work and thought processes which develop their understanding. A culture is fostered where children are fluent in their ICT skills while able to make informed decisions about the best method of approach, ICT or otherwise, for a particular task. The implications of technologies are considered both for how we live now and for what the future may hold, both at home and in the workplace.

ICT is taught as a discrete subject throughout the School, from Nursery to Year 8. Skills are taught progressively in different years, as the ability of the children advances. The Early Years provision sets a sound basis of key skills by means of appropriately accessible programs. Pupils log on to their own accounts from Year 1 onwards. Office applications are introduced from Year 2. Much of the ICT work relates to topic work linked to areas of study undertaken with class and subject teachers.

Teaching takes place in the ICT Suite which comprises 24 workstations, allowing every child to work at their own computer. The Suite is also used by teachers of other subjects for subject-based ICT work. A trolley of 20 laptop computers furthers the integration of ICT into subject teaching. ICT skills are hence extended, while developing knowledge in other subjects. Most classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards which enhance subject teaching. Colour laser printers are provided in key areas. The majority of the equipment was provided as part of a major investment in ICT resources in 2009.

The whole School is network cabled with wireless networking to most areas. Filtered and monitored broadband internet access is available to pupils at appropriate times. Pupils have to adhere to an Acceptable Use Policy and the implications of Internet use and safety are taught.
