Science
Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he can eat for a lifetime
We aim for our pupils to become fishermen! Once they can understand and use scientific thinking to learn more about the world, pupils are equipped with a lifetime thirst for knowledge and the skills to seek out and learn independently.
Science is a way of knowing and a method of learning about the world we live in. Through scientific enquiry we build a body of knowledge about Life Processes and Living Things, Materials and their Properties and Physical Processes. Science at Holme Grange begins in the Nursery and is an important part of the curriculum throughout the entire school. From early on children are encouraged to question and investigate; to learn through their own discoveries and experiences.
Children are organised into cooperative pupil learning groups and we use guided enquiry teaching strategies to lead pupils towards continually developing and modifying their knowledge. Science is closely linked with ICT, Mathematics and Geography. From year 4 science is taught by a specialist teacher in our spacious fully equipped laboratory.
Our extensive grounds offer great opportunities for studying wildlife, flora and fauna. Plans are underway to develop areas for wildflowers, invertebrates, small mammal and bird studies.
Children are regularly assessed against national curriculum levels and are given targets for improvement and development. Our Year 6 children work towards 11+ and pupils in Years 7 and 8 work towards 13+ with some at scholarship level.
