English

English at Holme Grange is based on the Primary Literacy Framework and is a core subject. Throughout the school emphasis is placed on reading, grammar, spelling, comprehension and writing skills. Put broadly, the aim is for pupils to feel confident in expressing themselves using spoken and written word.

In the Pre-Prep, children are heard to read daily by a member of teaching staff and a class reading book is sent home each night. Spellings are learnt and tested on a weekly basis. In the Prep department pupils receive a wide and varied study programme supported by educational trips and activities such as visits by authors to the School.

Years 7 and 8 follow the Common Entrance programme, studying and interpreting more complex literature from the works of Shakespeare to the modern day.
