SUMMER 2008

African Music Workshop

Music has the capability of bringing people of all ages together and this was true of our workshop which involved all pupils from Reception to Year 8 and even the teachers! The leaders Douglas Coombes and Carole Lindsay-Douglas were able to engage everyone through their dynamic and colourful presentation of African Music.

We were taught songs with actions, played musical games, heard stories, saw a variety of authentic clothing and were introduced to an assortment of traditional African instruments. Eight pupils from Years 7 and 8 were selected to act as helpers and their principal rôle was to perform in a five part percussion piece with each part needing a different rhythmic pattern. The ninety minute workshop whizzed by and everyone left with more knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the different components of this vibrant music.
