The oldest inhabited castle in the world was the setting for a Year 2 history trip. The first stop in the precincts of Windsor Castle was to sketch the Round Tower. Here, recalling a lesson, the children spotted that Her Majesty was not at home because the Union Flag was flying, rather than the Royal Standard.
On entering the North Terrace a Harris hawk greeted us. His handler kindly gave us an impromptu talk about him, while he was taking a break from pest control.
An exciting part of the day was a hands-on session with armour, most of which had been specially made to fit children. Tantalisingly, the tables were laid out with gloves to protect the eagerly awaited artefacts. After an interesting introductory talk, about the Castle and armour, members of Year 2 eagerly donned as many parts of armour as their blue gloved hands could find.
Replete from lunch in a former stable block, the children set off for a tour of the State Apartments and the rest of the precincts. Along the way a steward kindly entrusted his two-way radio to one lucky boy.
The final stop was one of the Castle shops where big decisions had to be made between the many possible souvenirs.
Windsor Castle provided a memorable day to bring to life Year 2's studies of 'Knights and Castles' back at School. |
