SUMMER 2007

Cornwall - Years 7 & 8

Following Common Entrance Examinations for Year 8, the group headed west with Year 7 for a week in a youth hostel on the Lizard Peninsular in Cornwall. They left behind many of the trapping of the modern world. Not a single iPod, computer game or even a radio was packed. The trip was destined be one of good old fashioned fun; only the great outdoors and the pleasure of each other’s company were to be their sources of entertainment.

The week, which proved to be the last of the summer’s sunshine, was spent on many enjoyable walks across the rugged moors of Cornwall or along parts of the South West Coast Path.

One day the children hiked to Kynance Cove and spent a thoroughly enjoyable day playing in the surf and constructing huge sandcastles.

Back at the youth hostel the children had to fend for themselves. Each day a designated team had to cook the meals for everyone, having bought the provisions themselves. They cooked meals with fresh ingredients and many were anxious to return home to cook the full Sunday roast for their parents.

The hostel nestles right under the Lizard Lighthouse and, with the early morning mist each day, the children were often rudely awoken by the strident blast of a fog horn just metres from their bedroom window!
