Year 4 Crops Up on the Farm

On a cloudy but warm day in late summer, our Year 4 children visited Grays Farm so as to learn about seasonal farming and soil fertility. Our tour of the farm was hosted by Farmer Gray himself, who is an extremely experienced and active farmer. Although this gentleman is in his eighties, he conducted us around the fields at some speed and even drove a tractor so that we could see heaps of potatoes thrown up with the soil as a furrow was ploughed.

Mr Gray explained the ways in which farming was done in an environmentally friendly fashion. The children were particularly fascinated by his tales of 'predator bugs' which eat insect pests thereby rendering the use of poisons unnecessary.

The highlight of our visit was the chance for all the children to pick both runner beans and corn. Some pupils were also able to gather fresh raspberries, 'quality checking' a few along the way! All the children returned home with a variety of fresh produce and a great afternoon was had by all.
