AUTUMN 2005

Egyptology at Highclere Castle

The Year 3 trip to Highclere Castle, the home of genuine Egyptian artefacts, was eagerly awaited. As the coach approached the Castle the children let out excited gasps and were amazed by the building’s grand architecture. The children were taken to explore the beautiful grounds and were interested to hear stories about the work of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter in the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The visit brought to life the children’s classwork on Ancient Egypt when they had the opportunity to dress up as Tutankhamun or Queen Ankhesenamun, write in hieroglyphics and touch real artefacts. After lunch, they went on an observational walk to the Cemetery Chapel noting all the different things they could see, hear, smell and touch. It was a wonderful opportunity to breathe in the fresh country air and enjoy the autumn sunshine. The trip was a fun packed day out and it was not altogether surprising that some of the party sneaked in a nap on the way home!
