A passing traveller, on his journey through Africa, is amazed when he chances upon the weird mountain known as Leopard Rock. It seems to have collapsed lopsidedly by some dramatic stroke of fate. As he looks at it, strange characters loom up from the past to tell their tales about the destruction of the mountain. He is transported back to a time when the Vumba Mountains were ruled by two chiefs; the great and good Rivisi and the greedy, evil Kano.

The plains around Leopard Rock are alive with many species of game; beautiful animals which roam wild and free in perfect safety until that day when Captain Realrat and his poaching cronies land on a nearby shore. Realrat's plot is to capture or slaughter those creatures which have splendid furs or tusks as these can be sold for enormous profit. He plans to become a very wealthy man but he knows that first he must seek the protection of Kano.

Kano is delighted to promote Realrat's evil ploys for he sees a way to make himself a bargain. At last he is able to effect the murder of Rivisi.

According to the strange legend of Leopard Rock, the creatures of this land also understand Realrat's intentions. Protected by their gods, Flash and Vumba, supported by the International Brotherhood of Animals and inspired by the great Flame of Hope, these creatures conspire with Rivisi and his tribe to overthrow all those who seek to bring about destruction. Their dream of a sanctuary where both man and beast can live in harmony is realised.

The action of the play takes place in the course of one day and night. This could all have happened long ago or right now, for poaching is still a very real and dreadful threat today.

The play is a tribute to all those people who strive to protect and preserve our wildlife.
